Antioch University

Antioch University has a long history of providing nontraditional education. Founded 1852, its mission was to educate the whole person - a notion that is part of mainstream thinking today, but that was a fringe idea for most of Antioch's existence.

Antioch University does not offer a wide spectrum of campus-free distance learning degrees. The university offers only master's degrees through distance learning, and these still require some shirt-term residency. Most of the one to two week campus sessions take place at the university's main campuses in Yellow Springs, Ohio, and in Portland, Oregon. However, there are other campuses in Los Angeles, Seattle, Santa Barbara, and Keene, New Hampshire. There is also a European center in Traifelberg, Germany.

The master's degrees at Antioch University are all structured as 'individualized' programs. This means that students must arrange a degree committee of two suitable people from within the relevant profession being studied. This committee helps design, monitor, and evaluate all work in the program. Once the committee and program of study have been established, the degree usually takes two to three years to complete. A thesis is required.

Antioch University grants credit for life and work experience and other prior learning. This procedure requires extensive review, consultation, and documentation, and prospective students must produce a portfolio of supporting material.
